Imagine seven beautiful, spinning wheels of energy along your spine, from the base to the crown of your head. These are your chakras, each a hub of life energy (prana) that governs different aspects of your being, from your basic survival instincts to your ability to connect with the divine.

  • Root Chakra (Muladhara): Grounds us, representing our foundational feelings, safe and supported
  • Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): Balance and freedom. Ability to accept others and new experiences.

Let me share a quick story… A few years back, I felt utterly disconnected from my own life, like I was watching it from the sidelines. I had spent 20 years in meth and alcohol addiction and 8 years clean and sober and was still stuck in my trauma, pain and suffering. I began to search for a way to be more comfortable in my own skin. Incorporate small rituals into your day that help maintain chakra balance, like grounding exercises for your root chakra or gratitude practices for your heart chakra. Here are example exercises to help you clear imbalanced chakras.

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Exercise: Walking Meditation

  • Find a quiet space outdoors where you can walk barefoot. Slowly walk, focusing on each step and the sensation of the earth beneath your feet. Visualize red energy at the base of your spine grounding you as you walk.

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

Exercise: Hip Circles

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and place your hands on your hips. Gently move your hips in circular motions, first clockwise then counter-clockwise. Visualize orange energy swirling around your sacral area, enhancing creativity and well-being.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Exercise: Power Pose

  • Stand in a confident stance with your feet apart and your hands on your hips, or raise your arms above your head in a V shape. Hold this pose for a few minutes, breathing deeply and visualizing a bright yellow light at your solar plexus, empowering your sense of self.

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Exercise: Chest Opening Stretch

  • Sit or stand with your back straight. Clasp your hands behind your back and gently straighten your arms, lifting them slightly and opening your chest. Breathe deeply and focus on a green light emanating from your heart center, fostering love and compassion.

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Exercise: Humming Breath (Bhramari Pranayama)

  • Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, make a humming sound. Feel the vibration in your throat. Imagine a bright blue light at your throat, clearing the way for honest and clear communication.

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Exercise: Trataka (Candle Gazing Meditation)

  • Light a candle and place it at eye level a few feet in front of you. Gaze softly at the flame, trying not to blink. After a minute, close your eyes and visualize the flame at your third eye. Focus on indigo light enhancing your intuition and inner vision.

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

Exercise: Silence Meditation

  • Sit in a quiet place, preferably early in the morning or late at night. Close your eyes and focus on the top of your head. Visualize a violet light expanding from your crown, connecting you to the universe. Sit in silence, allowing yourself to feel the unity and peace with the cosmos.
