In this seventh edition of our 12 month Holistic Health Blog Series we’ll be exploring The eight dimensions of wellness. This is a model that addresses the following 8 areas that have the highest impact on the quality of our life experience.

  1. Emotional Wellness: This refers to a your ability to cope with the challenges of life and maintain a positive outlook. It includes managing stress, practicing self-care, and seeking support when needed.
  2. Physical Wellness: This involves taking care of your body through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep. It also includes seeking medical care when needed and practicing safe behaviors.
  3. Intellectual Wellness: This dimension encourages lifelong learning and the pursuit of knowledge. Activities that challenge the mind, such as reading, writing, or solving puzzles are examples of this faculty of the 8 dimensions.
  4. Social Wellness: This refers to the relationships and connections that you have with others. It includes building and maintaining positive relationships, communicating effectively, and contributing to your community.
  5. Occupational Wellness: This involves finding satisfaction and fulfillment in your work or career. It includes developing skills, setting goals, and finding meaning in your vocation.
  6. Spiritual Wellness: This dimension encourages a sense of purpose and meaning in life. It includes exploring your values, beliefs, and sense of connection to something greater than yourself.
  7. Environmental Wellness: This refers to the physical surroundings you live, work, and play in. It includes taking care of the planet, reducing waste, and promoting sustainability.
  8. Financial Wellness: This involves managing your financial resources effectively. It includes setting financial goals, creating a budget, and making informed financial decisions.

By focusing on identifying weak points and strengthening what’s already established and working in these eight dimensions of wellness, you will undoubtedly experience a better sense of overall well-being.

Understanding Trauma and its Impact on Wellness

As we’ve discussed throughout this series, trauma is deeply distressing–no two ways about it. It takes on many forms, and more than likely is creeping in (or has crept in already) on these eight dimensions in some form or another. I’m sure you can appreciate the following metaphor. If you don’t regularly take into account the various ways trauma is affecting these areas, your emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, occupational, financial, and environmental garden so to speak will slowly become overgrown with weeds of pain, suffering, fear, and doubt.

Trauma is way more common than you might think, affecting millions of people worldwide (and more likely all people to some degree) Its impact can be private like suffering the loss of a loved one or losing a job. But it also affects communities and nations like it did on 9/11. The more we understand the impact of how trauma manifests in these eight dimensions of wellness, the better equipped we can be at identifying triggers, creating better habits, and helping those around you cope with trauma by being an example to them–not by force, but with knowledge and grace. Throughout this article, we refer to trauma survivors, to be clear each and every one of us has been through some form of trauma, so that term can apply to each of us in varying degrees. Trauma cannot be measured and is unique to each individual‘s experience, environment and psyche.


Trauma’s Effect on Emotional Wellness

When you experience a truly traumatic event, it can lead to emotional responses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, anger and more. And if you don’t have strategies to deal with trauma, it can lead to life-long, chronic issues.

Think about the great friend you had with a Cinderella dream of marrying the perfect man who early on in her dating life got cheated on. Now, she’s jaded and assumes all men are cheaters. Think about the implications that has on how she thinks about relationships moving forward. If she thinks all guys are cheaters, then what’s the sense of caring about a relationship in the first place? And if she doesn’t care about relationships, why would she care about how she acts in them? And if like attracts like, she’s likely to attract someone who thinks along the same lines. After all, birds of a feather flock together. You see, a small weed grew to choke the beauty that was her garden of innocence, hope, and sincerity. And somewhere down the road, she becomes the very thing she hated.

These emotional responses are common and can make it difficult for trauma survivors to cope with their feelings and actions. When survivors of trauma experience intense emotions, such as fear, anger, or sadness it can be overwhelming and make it challenging to function normally. Even though it feels right, acting on your own emotions to solve your problems is often a road down the wrong path. It’s like digging yourself into a deeper ditch–a lot of energy being used to go in the wrong direction.

But this is a common response to emotional trauma that we’ve kept from our childhood. As infants we had no other mechanism of letting our caregivers know what we needed or how we felt. So, we resorted to our emotions and voice to cry out when hungry, tired, or uncomfortable. We were never taught methods to use language and reasoning to replace our infant model of getting what we wanted and so we still use those infantile methods as adults. I’m in no way diminishing concepts like mourning and emotions like sadness, remorse, etc. I’m pointing to the fact that we haven’t been taught how to properly deal with the effects of trauma in our lives. And because a lot of people lack this knowledge and understanding, they struggle to regulate their emotions, leading to mood swings, irritability, lashing out, difficulty managing stress, destructive life choices and addiction. Addressing emotional wellness is essential in trauma recovery.

When you have proven methods to manage your trauma, emotions, and the positive actions they lead to create positive results, you are more likely to resort to them to improve yourself in any given moment if and when traumatic moments or triggers arise. There are various ways to address emotional wellness in trauma recovery. Therapy, counseling, peer support, and trauma-healing specialists can provide a safe space for you to process your emotions and develop healthy coping strategies if you’re dealing with insurmountable trauma that seems to be taking over your life. As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, mindfulness practices, such as meditation and yoga, can help manage your emotions and reduce stress. Support groups and community outreach can also be beneficial, providing a sense of community and connection with others who have experienced similar traumas.

In summary, emotional trauma is no small thing. If left unchecked:

  • It can lead to common emotional responses such as acting out of character, acting on impulse, letting your emotions get the best of you, chronic anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction.
  • You may experience intense emotions, such as fear, anger, or sadness, and may struggle to regulate these emotions when they come up if you don’t have the knowledge and understanding of how to properly deal with them.

Improving this dimension of wellness is critical to living a life where you feel like you are steering the ship rather than be dragged around by your emotions.

The Role of Trauma in Intellectual Wellness

Here we have lesser known, yet extremely important part of your identity. Simply put, Intellectual wellness is the ability to use your mental faculties in a way that’s meaningful to you, and to be open to new ideas and experiences. It involves recognizing your creative abilities and finding ways to expand your knowledge and skills. This dimension of wellness often informs and serves the others.


As a holistic health practitioner, it’s important to me that you understand the profound connection between trauma and intellectual wellness. Nurturing your intellectual faculties can be a fun engaging way to increasing your emotional IQ, try new things without embarrassment, and fostering patience and mental resilience. These are activities you likely do already like reading, tackling challenging puzzles like crosswords or cryptoquips, engaging in respectful debates with those who hold different viewpoints, learning a new language or musical instrument, exploring a new hobby, playing chess, or even teaching and tutoring others. These things do more than just keep your mind active; they help heal and strengthen your intellectual health. The more you practice intentional mindfulness, the more likely  you are to rule over your mind and not let it get the best of you. Your ability to guide your mind through obstacles and challenges becomes gamified. Soon, things that once seemed to overwhelm you become challenges you take on with a resilient attitude knowing that you will figure it out.

I’m excited to share how we can enhance cognitive functioning through intellectual wellness. Trauma can significantly impact two key areas of cognitive functioning: memory and attention. Let’s face it, if you’ve experienced trauma, you may find it challenging to concentrate, remember important information, or make decisions. It’s a dissociative consequence of traumatic experiences that limits your ability to perform daily activities.

However, promoting intellectual wellness can be a transformative way to improve these cognitive functions. By engaging in activities like the ones listed above, you can enhance your memory, attention, and decision-making skills.

Beyond these stimulating activities, there are additional strategies to boost intellectual wellness:

  • Establishing a Daily Routine: Creating a structured and predictable routine can provide a sense of stability and focus.
  • Practicing Mindfulness Techniques: Techniques such as meditation or deep breathing can enhance focus and concentration.
  • Getting Enough Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for optimal cognitive functioning.
  • Eating a Healthy Diet: Nutrients essential for brain health can significantly impact cognitive functions.
  • Seeking Support from a Mental Health Professional and Peer Support Specialists: Therapy can provide valuable coping strategies and improve cognitive functioning.

It’s empowering to know that by fostering intellectual wellness, survivors can reclaim and enhance their cognitive abilities, leading to a happier more joyful life!

Trauma and Physical Wellness: A Complex Relationship

Now that we covered the intellectual dimension of wellness, let’s shift gears to the physical dimension, because the two are separate yet deeply connected, as well as Spirit and flesh, one warring against the other. Let’s focus on the flesh; we’ll get to the spirit a little later in this article. I want to shed light on the intricate connection between trauma and physical health. Because once you have the tools to optimize your physical and intellectual wellness, the world is your oyster and there is nothing standing in your way of transformation. This delicate part of wellness is crucial for trauma survivors who often face various physical issues like chronic pain, exhaustion, headaches, insomnia, sickness, etc. And as you well know, trauma itself can be a result of physical abuse, which compound these challenges.

I want you to think about the last time you were facing a physical challenge. Did the physical aspect you were thinking of come with a mental script? For instance, how would you describe someone who looks depressed? How do they look? What thoughts are running through their head? Depression is a mental state, however it’s absolutely affected, informed, fed, and kept alive by some number of physical aspects. It’s hard to stay in a depressed state standing upright with a big smile on your face thinking happy thoughts! Check this article out!  It makes sense then, that by adopting our physical self to embody habits and protocols that imply a healthy, safe, and desirable lifestyle, you will no doubt experience a physical transformation that will be accompanied with a strong mental fortitude.

Focusing on the dimension of physical wellness offers a hopeful path to managing physical symptoms of trauma. There are several compassionate and effective ways to promote physical wellness:

  • Regular Exercise: Engaging in physical activities like yoga, walking, hiking or running can significantly reduce stress and improve mood. These activities not only strengthen the body but also provide a sense of empowerment and control. Bioenergetics and breath work are specific protocols for dealing with trapped energy and trauma in the body, and I highly recommend this practice.
  • Proper Nutrition: Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is essential. Proper nutrition provides the necessary nutrients for the body to heal and function optimally, supporting both physical and emotional recovery. Keep in mind, what works for some may not work for all. It’s great to search the internet and seek others who have experienced similar things to you. And if your trauma is manifesting itself in similar ways, adopting the methods of others could help. However, I suggest connecting with a Medical professional and getting a blood panel done to address what is specifically going on with your unique body.
  • Adequate Sleep: Prioritizing quality sleep is vital for the body to recover, maintain proper immune function, and process emotional experiences. Creating a restful sleep environment and establishing a consistent sleep routine can make a significant difference. Do not listen to the ‘guru’s out there who pride themselves on little to no sleep. This is dangerous advice will lead to more exhaustion, stress, and all that comes with it.

By addressing these areas, trauma survivors can find hope and resilience. Focusing on the dimension of physical wellness empowers us to better manage our physical symptoms and improve our physical and mental health. This holistic approach fosters a sense of balance and harmony, guiding survivors toward a healthier, more fulfilling life!

Trauma’s Impact on Social Wellness: Isolation and Disconnection

As a holistic health coach, I see a lot of cases where a person’s social wellness is affected by past trauma. And it’s no surprise, because experiencing trauma can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection, making it challenging to form and maintain healthy relationships. I’m sure you’ve experienced something and thought to yourself, ‘No one understands. I’m alone in this battle. I’ve got no one to talk to about this thing.’ You feel like thing you’re going through is unique to you.This often results in loneliness and social anxiety, creating a cycle that can be far-reaching and debilitating. We are not alone in our experiences, others have gone through similar challenges in someway or can relate. It’s likely been written in a song, book, or poem. Or spoken on stage in a play, or under the guise of comedy. Some have created entire coaching programs from the trauma that you’ve experienced and think you’re alone in. (hint hint check out the end of this article)

Trauma survivors may struggle with trust, emotional regulation, or addiction and can be easily triggered by certain stimuli. These challenges make social situations difficult, leading to feelings of alienation and despair. Promoting social wellness in trauma survivors is crucial for improving their relationships and overall well-being, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

The occupational dimension recognizes personal satisfaction and enrichment in one’s life through work. At the center of occupational wellness is the premise that occupational development is related to one’s attitude about one’s work. When you think about the far-reaching effects of trauma, it’s essential to consider how it can impact a person’s occupational wellness. After experiencing trauma, individuals may find themselves grappling with challenges that make it difficult to perform their job duties effectively. These challenges can include:

  • difficulty concentrating
  • coping with stress
  • managing their emotions

As a result, trauma survivors may experience frustration, anxiety, and even depression, which can further exacerbate their work-related difficulties. It’s a vicious cycle that can significantly impact the other dimensions of wellness. Promoting occupational wellness in trauma survivors is crucial to help them manage these challenges and improve their quality of life and day to day work environment. With occupational wellness we are looking to achieve a balance between work and leisure activities, allowing individuals to maintain a sense of purpose, while still taking care of their physical and emotional health.

To promote occupational wellness in trauma survivors, it’s essential to create a supportive work environment that acknowledges their unique experiences and needs. This may include providing access to mental health resources, offering flexible work schedules, and encouraging open communication between managers and employees. Moreover, employers can provide training and education to help trauma survivors develop the skills they need to manage their work-related challenges. This may include stress management techniques, time management strategies, and self-care practices.

Knowing your character strengths is a great way of identifying where you best fit inside of your organization. It’s also beneficial if you’re looking to pivot careers because your current career or job isn’t satisfying you on a deeper level. There are many tests that you can take to help identify your strengths areas of impact. I’ve taken the Fascinate Test and believe it offers a remarkably accurate assessment of your personality with regards to occupation. It’s my go recommended test to give people a gauge of where they are likely to find the most joy while offering the most impact in their unique way to organizations or even as entrepreneurs.

Ultimately, by creating a supportive work environment and providing access to resources and education, employers can help trauma survivors overcome their work-related challenges and improve their overall well-being. It’s essential to remember that everyone’s healing journey is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to promoting occupational wellness in trauma survivors. However, by taking a proactive and compassionate approach, employers can make a significant difference in the lives of their employees, helping them to heal, grow, and thrive both at work and in their personal lives.

Trauma and Financial Wellness: The Cost of Healing

In 2024, financial wellness is more crucial than ever. We are still getting over the past few years when the world was blind-sided by Covid-19 and the traumatic consequences of nationwide shutdowns, isolating people from loved ones, and quite literally socially distancing our selves from others. The irreversible financial damage that ensued for individuals and businesses–especially small business– was absolutely devastating and traumatic! It was a dark time to say the least.

From medical bills and therapy costs to lost income due to time taken off work for appointments, recovery, shutdowns, etc. these financial burdens can add to the stress and anxiety trauma survivors are already experiencing, making it even more challenging to focus on healing and recovery.

Financial wellness involves more than just managing money; it encompasses living within your means, setting financial goals, and creating a plan to achieve them. Addressing financial wellness can help trauma survivors gain a sense of control and stability, which is incredibly empowering and beneficial to their healing process. Having a strong financial wellness plan is a fantastic way of getting ahead of negative events that we can’t predict. When we’ve taken care of our finances to make sure they are in good order, it opens up space for us to focus on the other aspects of our lives beyond survival. Living in constant survival mode is stressful and undesirable. If left unchecked, one may feel forced to making questionable decisions that could compromise their morals and ethics for the sake of money. This struggle can seem insurmountable, but one step at a time will get us to our goal.

Steps to Enhance Financial Wellness

1. Assessing the Current Financial Situation:

  • Create a budget to understand your income and expenses.
  • Track your expenses to identify areas where cuts can be made.
  • Explore additional sources of income, such as additional employment, or local community support organizations.

2. Building Financial Resilience:

  • Develop a flexible and adaptable mindset to handle changes in income or expenses.
  • Plan for unexpected costs related to the healing journey.
  • Build a support network of friends, family, or professionals for emotional and practical support.

3. Setting Financial Goals:

  • Pay off medical bills.
  • Save for future therapy sessions.
  • Build an emergency fund.
  • Set specific, measurable, and achievable goals to gain a sense of purpose and direction.

4. Creating a Plan to Achieve Financial Goals:

  • Develop a realistic and flexible plan considering potential challenges or obstacles.
  • Seek help from a financial advisor or therapist to create a plan tailored to your unique situation.

I know none of these solutions sound exciting, fun, or cool, but that’s EXACTLY why so few people put them into practice! Often times individuals that resort to ‘retail therapy’ as a way of coping with the stresses of life have a LOT more stress in their lives than usual, because it creates additional financial hardship. I could just as easily tell you to go buy the next shiny object that grabs your attention and you would feel like that’s the right thing to do. And it may even bring you some fleeting sense of happiness or joy. This proves how our mind and emotions are at odds with what’s actually best for us sometimes.

True joy and happiness isn’t found in objects of desire. I’m not saying to become a never shop and live minimalistic. I am saying the more you attempt to fill the void in your spirit with material things, the emptier you will become, because you’ll realize no thing is big and shiny enough to fill what your traumatic experience took. What was taken from you during a traumatic experience can be restored with safety, love and healing.  By dedicating a bit of your time to focus on your financial health, your future self will thank you! Financial wellness isn’t just about having money; in fact holding cash in a bank account doesn’t even beat the rate of inflation today! This is about building real true security, becoming empowered, and taking control of your future.

The Impact of Financial Wellness on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness

  • Emotional Wellness: Financial stability can alleviate anxiety and improve mental health.

  • Environmental Wellness: Financial health can enable living in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Occupational Wellness: A stable financial situation can lead to better job performance and satisfaction.
  • Spiritual Wellness: Financial peace can free up mental space to explore deeper existential and spiritual questions.
  • Financial Wellness: Achieving financial goals provides a sense of accomplishment and security.

In conclusion, addressing financial wellness is essential for trauma survivors. By assessing their current financial situation, building resilience, setting goals, and creating a plan, individuals can gain a sense of control and stability. This process can be incredibly empowering and significantly enhance their overall well-being, contributing to a brighter, more fulfilling future.

Trauma and Environmental Wellness: Seeking Safety and Security

The environmental dimension encompasses a healthy relationship with the earth and its resources, and a healthy relationship with your personal surroundings. When it comes to environmental wellness, many of us imagine peaceful natural settings or homes that are eco-friendly. But for those who have experienced trauma, this concept takes on a much more profound and personal significance. Trauma can have a powerful impact on a person’s sense of safety and security in their surroundings. Often times, environments can trigger traumatic memories to surface and cause unusual behavior and changes in demeanor as a coping mechanism. Certain smells have the ability to do the same. I absolutely include all of your senses in the environmental dimension. If you are sensitive to certain aspects of your surroundings, it can lead to intense feelings of anxiety, fear, displeasure, judgment, etc. making it difficult for you to feel comfortable or at ease where you are.

For those who have experienced trauma, it’s about feeling safe, secure, comfortable and at peace in their surroundings, regardless of where they are. Imagine for a moment that you’ve just survived a harrowing event such as a natural disaster, a violent crime, or a serious accident. It’s only natural to feel uneasy in places that remind you of the trauma or even in any environment that feels unfamiliar or unpredictable. This heightened sense of vulnerability can make it incredibly challenging to carry out daily activities, form connections with others, and maintain a sense of normalcy.

Creating safe and secure environments for trauma survivors is a crucial aspect of promoting their overall well-being. By establishing a sense of predictability, consistency, and control, we can help alleviate the distressing symptoms that often accompany trauma. So, what does a safe and secure environment look like for a trauma survivor? It might involve:

  • A Predictable Routine and Schedule: Providing structure can reduce anxiety and create a sense of stability.
  • Clear Boundaries and Expectations: Knowing what to expect can help trauma survivors feel more secure. Creating and sticking to boundaries when necessary will foster your ability to be in control of your environment and increase your peace of mind.
  • Comfortable and Familiar Spaces: Surroundings that feel safe and comforting can foster a sense of peace. Keep this in mind when considering your occupational dimension. Shift the surrounding of your work environment to best suit your happiness and joy.
  • Opportunities for Choice and Autonomy: Empowering people with control over their environment can be incredibly healing. Trauma survivors oftentimes feel their sense of choice has been stripped away. Reinforce your power of choice by choosing what’s around you.
  • Minimizing Exposure to Triggers and Stressors: Reducing potential triggers can help prevent re-traumatization. Removing triggers from your surroundings is equally as powerful as adding to them.

By incorporating these elements into a trauma survivor’s environment, we can help foster a sense of safety and security that promotes healing and growth. It’s essential to remember that everyone’s healing journey is unique, and what works for one person might not work for another. Listening to and respecting the individual’s needs and preferences is crucial in creating an environment that supports their well-being.

By creating safe and secure environments that cater to your unique needs, you can regain a sense of control and improve your power of choice! Let’s approach this with empathy and love, ensuring that each survivor feels seen, heard, and supported on their healing journey.

Trauma and Spiritual Wellness: Searching for Meaning

By definition, Spiritual wellness is the dimension of well-being that involves finding meaning and purpose in life, and connecting with something greater than yourself. It can include a your morals, ethics, and beliefs, and it can be religious or non-religious. Spiritual wellness can also involve practices that shape your thoughts, feelings, deep seated beliefs and behaviors for the better. We are spiritual beings living in a body having a physical experience. I want to share with you a model of the world that acknowledges your spirit with regards to the eight dimensions of wellness. When we experience deep trauma in this physical world, it can  lead to an existential crisis. Trauma survivors may question long-held beliefs and values, leaving them feeling lost and adrift. Suffering, fear, hopelessness, and a slew of other emotions often accompany those who are heavy in spirit. However, by fostering the connection between ourselves and our spiritual beginning, we restore meaning to our lives and find purpose beyond our day to day life. Suddenly, your world has meaning and you find delight in things that were once mundane. You’re filled with joy for the blessing of another day which is never promised. And the momentum of the acknowledgement of that grace in your life begins building within you until soon it is pouring out of you and into others who notice the inexplicable transformation thats come upon you. Cherish and respect the spirit within you and the source of your spirit will reward you.

Spiritual Wellness and Its Impact on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness

1. Physical Wellness:

  • Spiritual practices like meditation and mindfulness can reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  • Engaging in activities that foster a sense of peace and connection can improve sleep quality and boost overall physical health.

2. Emotional Wellness:

  • Spiritual wellness provides a sense of purpose and meaning, which can enhance emotional resilience.
  • Practices such as journaling, praying, and reflective thinking help process emotions and foster emotional balance.

3. Intellectual Wellness:

  • Exploring spiritual beliefs and values can stimulate intellectual growth and curiosity.
  • Engaging in discussions about spirituality can enhance critical thinking and open-mindedness.

4. Social Wellness:

  • Spiritual wellness encourages the formation of deep, meaningful relationships through shared beliefs and values.
